A Brief History of Brass Bands This art form began 157 years ago deep in the coal fields of England’s Yorkshire Region. Workers in mines and associated factories took up brass instruments as a form of celebration and recreation that spread with the industrial revolution. This amateur tradition of heartfelt music making became popular in other European countries and North America as people began to emigrate. Soon, brass bands were not only participating in organized competitions, but commissioning original concert music. Throughout their history, brass bands have maintained a tradition of service to the communities in which they exist as exemplified by the bands of the Salvation Army. To this rich history comes Canada’s Hannaford Street Silver Band. In recognition of its accomplishments, in November of 2003, the HSSB was awarded its second Lieutenant Governor’s Award for the Arts by the Province of Ontario. One of its many commissioned works, Requiem Mass for a Charred Skull by Bramwell Tovey won the 2003 JUNO Award for Best Classical Composition. We are often asked about the name of the band. There is in fact a Hannaford Street in Toronto’s east end, home to one of its founders. True to its industrial roots, Hannaford Street itself was named after a Businessman who was active in Canada’s famed Grand Trunk Railway which started in1853 and 1923 was amalgamated with the Canadian National Railways, which later became Canadian National.
