Sound the Trumpet

We open our season with the gifted Canadian trumpet virtuoso and dynamic performer, Jens Lindemann, who will perform Allen Vizzutti’s remarkable work inspired by Japan, entitled Rising Sun. This major new work has three movements titled Mount Fuji, Temples of Kyoto and Shinkansan: The Bullet Train. The HSSB’s Artistic Director and Resident Conductor, Curtis Metcalf, will direct the HSSB in John Burge’s Rocky Mountain Overture, Gordon Langford’s Sinfonietta and Douglas Court’s Standing on the Promises.

The Spirit Soars

The Nathaniel Dett Choral, Guest Choir

We are delighted to welcome Brainerd Blyden-Taylor and the Nathaniel Dett Chorale in a concert that will celebrate that beloved form of musical expression, the spiritual. The Nathaniel Dett Chorale is Canada’s first professional choral group dedicated to Afrocentric music of all styles including classical, spiritual, gospel, jazz, folk and blues. Our concert will feature special arrangements combining the Nathaniel Dett and the HSSB. On its own, The HSSB will perform the young Canadian composer Gabriel Major Marothy’s Urchins.

The Majesty of Christmas

Under the inspired baton of Richard Bradshaw, General Director of the Canadian Opera Company, we once again join forces with the Canadian Children’s Opera Chorus and Youth Chorus for our annual concert in the acoustic splendour of the Cathedral Church of St. James. The featured work will be the premiere of the brass band and children’s choir version of Canadian composer John Burge’s Angels’ Voices, a celebrated work inspired by the poetry of William Blake, Emily Dickinson, Richard Lovelace and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Join in heart-felt congregational singing of many cherished Christmas carols.

Bollywood Brass

Autorickshaw, Guest Ensemble: Suba Sankaran, Ed Hanley, Rich Brown, Debashis Sinha

The HSSB will collaborate with the award winning Autorickshaw in an afternoon of world inspired music making. J. Scott Irvine's arrangement of A. R. Raham's Urvashi, Urvashi and Suba Sankaran's arrangement entitled, Bollywoood Brass will be performed. Autorickshaw will perform Saraswati by Sankaran and Ganamurthy by Thygarja. Jazz will make it way into our concert when the brass of the HSSB are added to Autorickshaw's unique arrangements of Gillespie's A Night in Tunisia and Ellington's Caravan.

We are honoured to welcome to our stage Joe Alessi, Principal Trombone of the New York Philharmonic who will perform Joseph Turrin’s Illuminations. This concert, led by our distinguished guest conductor, Elgar Howarth, will feature the world premiere of a new work for brass band by the Canadian composer Barbara Croall, commissioned by the HSSB with the generous support of the Ontario Arts Council. Other works will include Elgar Howarth’s Mosaic and Wilfred Heaton’s Contest Music. This event is the final event of our three-day Festival of Brass, our annual celebration of youth, community and the very best of professional music-making.

Our Festival weekend begins with the Hannaford Street Youth Band's Young Artist Competition. Listen as members of this vibrant ensemble directed by Larry Shields perform for the opportunity to be a soloist with the Hannaford Street Silver Band. The Hannaford Community Youth Band and the Hannaford Junior Band will perform along with Oakville’s own Intrada Brass.
